3 killed in Oyo bullion van attack

COMMISSIONER of Police in Oyo State, Ngozi Onadeko has confirmed the death of some Policemen during a gunshot duel at Iwo Road, Ibadan between the policemen and some suspected armed robbers who attacked a bullion van and carted away some cash.

  Onadeko, who conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the scene of the crime on Thursday, confirmed that two policemen were killed. She, however, said that one of the robbers was also shot dead during the attack but the robbers made away with his body.

    She said the two killed Policemen were attached to the bullion van and they were stopped by some unknown gunmen who started shooting sporadically to scare people off and later killed the two officers.

  While describing the attack as a coordinated one, Onadeko said all exit points in Ibadan have been placed on red alert. According to her, the move is to prevent the fleeing suspects from escaping.

  “It is a coordinated attack which we are still trying to find out what happened because they trailed the bullion van from where it went to get money to dispense it to the place.  Investigation had begun to unravel the circumstances surrounding the robbery Ibadan is under lockdown with the State Police Command working closely with other security agencies in tracking down the fleeing robbers,” the CP said.

   Mrs Onadeko, therefore, allayed the fears of people as efforts were ongoing to arrest the culprits.

   She noted that the Command had restrategised on how to secure the state optimally to stem down criminality in the state.

   Normal activities at Idi Ape – Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo State were on Thursday disrupted as suspected armed robbers attacked a bullion van conveying money.

   The armed robbers were said to have waylaid the van after which they released gunshots sporadically.

  The incident forced several motorists to abandon their vehicles and run for safety as security operatives struggled to repel the attack.
