Irate youths raze down part of Arugo Park in Owerri

 YOUTHS of Irete Community in Owerri West of Imo State on Tuesday, set ablaze some shops at the popular Arugo Park in Owerri, Imo State.

  The youths numbering over 200 were said to have swooped on the said park following the murder of their 45- year old brother, Uzoma Onyeaguocha by persons suspected to be members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

  According to a man found at the park as at  press time who also wanted his name not in print, the victim was a brother to a commuter vehicle operator whose vehicle was impounded by the NURTW taskforce along the busy Owerri/Onitsha express way.

  According to an eye witness, the late Uzoma, father of seven children lost his life in a trouble that ensued following the reported confiscation of his brother’s vehicle.

  Reporters gathered from the information source that over 12 lock-up shops were set ablaze by the rampaging youths but due to the quick intervention of the fire fighters, the shops were not razed beyond repair.

  The Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Imo State Branch, Sam Udeh, was said to have moved into the matter to bridge the fracas.

  According to one Dan Opara, Udeh swiftly invited security personal to douse the tension while firemen tried to put off the inferno. Sighted at the site of the incidence was the state Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Rex Anunobi also to ensure there was adequate tranquility.

  Anunobi appealed to the youths to calm down as he assured them of justice at the end of every finding leading to the demise of their brother. He equally requested the irate youths to send delegation to his office to ensure rapid solution to the problem. He promised to get to the state chief executive to ensure compensation to that effect.

  It will be recalled that office of the Transport Commissioner, last week, announced suspension of vehicle related taskforces in the state until further notice.
