Pensioners applaud Obiano, reassure Soludo



THE Chairman of Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Anambra State Council, Anthony C. Ugozor, has applauded the monumental achievements of Governor Willie Obiano while expressing optimism that the incoming Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration would sustain the tempo for continued rapid development of the state.

  Comrade Ugozor made the assertion in a press parley briefly after a courtesy visit by the NUP State Executive team to the new Head of Service (HOS), Mrs Okwy Theodora Igwegbe (mni), at the Jerome Udoji State Secretariat Complex, Awka, recently.

He listed Governor Obiano’s numerous legacy projects including the Anambra International Cargo/Passenger Airport, International Conference Centre and FIFA standard Awka Township Stadium as well as the Community Choose Your Projects Initiative which the state government disbursed N40 million to each of the 181 communities in the state, spurning unprecedented grassroots’ infrastructural upliftment across the state.

  The NUP boss commended Governor Obiano for actualising the oil producing status of the state to benefit from 13% derivation fund and other dividends which would immensely boost the economy and improved welfare of the entire citizenry, among other enviable accomplishments by the Obiano’s administration.

Congratulating Prof. Soludo for his landslide electoral victory, the NUP spokesman assured him of unalloyed solidarity and support by the union, urging him to swiftly look into the problems of pensioners, such as several years of unpaid gratuity, arrears of death benefits and harmonisation of monthly pensions for parity of people who retired on same salary grade levels.

 Comrade Ugozor, who was state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), expressed gratitude for the annual gifts of bags of rice to workers and pensioners for Christmas celebration by Governor Obiano, saying, “he started right from the onset of his stewardship to record impressive ties with the workforce by prompt payment of salaries and pension as at when due, which earned  him the nickname of ‘Alert Governor’.”

According to him, the NUP expects Prof. Soludo to hit the ground running when he takes over on March 17, being a globally renowned administrator and erudite economist, whose versatile experience as former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), should be replicated by the incoming administration in the state.

   Comrade Ugozor was optimistic that Prof. Soludo would strive to sustain Obiano’s legacies that ensured quantum leaps the state now achieved agriculturally, industrially, educationally, infrastructurally, medically and unprecedented attraction of huge investments through “Aku lue Uno” initiative, crowned with the miraculous completion of the Anambra International Cargo/Passenger Airport within 15 months.
