Properties destroyed as fire guts Catholic Church in Owerri

A CATHOLIC Church in Owerri, Imo State capital, Assumpta Cathedral, was reportedly gutted by fire in the late hours of Sunday, destroying many properties of the church.

  According to reports, the fire which started at about 11 pm was caused by electrical defects from the electrical unit in the church.

  Eyewitnesses said the fire started with an explosion leading to sparkling electrical wirings in the church.

  People around when the incident happened were seen using water and other substances available to fight the fire pending the arrival of the state fire service.

  The Director of Communications for the archdiocese, Rev Fr Raymond Nzeremeogu, disclosed that although musical equipment and other appliances were destroyed, firefighters were on the ground to stop further destruction.

  As of the time of filing this report, the exact damages caused by the inferno has not been revealed as the church has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
