Varsity don urges Soludo to prioritise tech education

PROFESSOR Ikechukwu Ekwealor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has advised Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, to make technical education in the state a top priority to tackle the challenge of high rate of youth unemployment.

Professor Ekwealor, who gave the advice in Awka, while having a chatting with the press, described education as a prerequisite for the development and progress of any society.

He said that  “a country or state that doesn’t have its citizens well educated will be said to have done nothing, because education, no matter the angle you follow to analyse it, makes people think differently, and project into what they can do – that’s why it’s important”.

The professor of microbiology urged that “everybody should have a basic education – this will bring success in this state; everybody will be happy for it”.

He emphasised that technical education, if well planned and effectively put in place, is capable of ending the mad rush to get rich quick syndrome among young people.

“There is a way to bring those boys who are in a hurry to make money, to the right direction – some of them think because there is lack of job decided to take the other way. However, I believe that the state can do something.

“When Jim Nwobodo was a governor, he introduced technical education in various schools, and brought in all kinds of equipment – the whole idea is that if you can’t intelligently use your brain to study, you use your hands.

“Though the initiative met a problem – the government didn’t lay a foundation before it took off the initiative – there were no teachers in those days; so the initiative collapsed.

“So, this is exactly part of the things I want the new governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo to look into.

“Again, the government should endeavour to gather all the artisans in the various workshops across the state, to put them in a right direction by giving them 100% free basic education technically, for them to be innovative,” he added.

Congratulating Governor Soludo on his successful inauguration, Professor Ekwealor prayed God to grant him wisdom and grace to succeed in his laudable programmes for the people of the state.
