Lagos shuts down health center over death of pregnant woman

MEADVILE Global Health Center has been temporarily shut down by Lagos State Government after the death of a 28-year-old woman after child birth.

Lagos State’s Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), revealed that the health center located at 1, Bashiru Street, off Lateef Adegboyega Street, Ago Palace Way, Okota was sealed for not complying with the set standards.

The husband of the deceased, TriplemMchaty in his Twitter handle narrated how the ‘incompetence’ of the hospital led to the death of his wife after she gave birth to a baby boy.

“After hours of trying to push no way, over 10 hours my wife already got so weak and tired, my sister called me around 11 pm that they want to carry out CS on her.

I was like something they supposed to have done since instead of suffering her. Around 2am they called me on phone that she needs blood, mind you I was in Enugu while all these was (sic) happening.

“Unfortunately she couldn’t make it back, she died, they removed the baby boy though but the baby didn’t cry due to prolonged labour, he drank lots of water and blood.”

“I rushed down to Enugu Airport and board a flight down to Lagos, getting to the hospital I found my wife’s lifeless body in one old looking operation room.

“I was so heartbroken; they gave me exorbitant bill to pay before I could carry her dead body, over 500k.”

Executive Secretary of HEFAMAA,  Abiola Idowu said the agency deployed a team to investigate the demise of Mchaty’s wif

Dr. Idowu disclosed that the preliminary investigations carried out by the team revealed that the hospital is not registered with HEFAMAA which contravenes the 2006 Health Sector Reform Law.

“It means the facility was operating illegally,” Idowu said, adding that the team also discovered that the hospital had inadequate personnel.

She also revealed that a full-scale investigation to reveal the facts of the death has been ordered.

Idowu, however, stated that the agency took the crucial decision in furtherance of public protection pending the final outcome of the ongoing investigations by the agency.
