...Calls for more government’s investment in newspaper

By Stanley Nwako

MANAGING Director and Chief Executive of Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation, publisher of National Light and sister brands in its stable, Sir Chuka Nnabuife, has been eulogised for taken the newspaper to heights far greater than where he met it on assumption of duties.

National President, Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ),  Chris Isiguzo, made the commendation while speaking during a courtesy visit to Corporate Headquarters of the corporation in Awka, on Friday.

Listing total turn-around of the paper through sheer dint of hard work, flair and dedication, introduction of standard best practices to make the paper competitive in the media industry, as well as recruitment of go-getter young journalists among his  legacies in the corporation, Chief Isiguzo passionately called the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to retain Nnabuife’s services.

This, he explains, is the only way the paper will consolidate its recent gains, and even go for more heights.

“Nnabuife is the engine room of ANPC. He has been very supportive to the management of this outfit. Chuka Nnabuife has lived up to his reputation as a vanguard of nation building and an institution in newspapering, not only in National Light but other reputable news outlets in Nigeria. If we count the number of awards received by Sir Chuka in his short time, so far, in National Light, we’d see he is a thoroughbred journalist and consummate leader.

Having won the pan-leadership honour and showed what magic he can do, despite financial constraints, Anambra State can only continue to benefit from his service if he is retained in his position. This is why we call on Prof.   Chukwuma Soludo to renew Nnabuife’s appointment,” he said.

Isiguzo also solicited more government intervention, through strategic investment in National Light in order  to  provide necessary funds for the newspaper’s optimum operation.

“If this is done, National Light will still maintain its lead among equals having been carrying on and faring well as the only surviving newspaper in South East.

Isiguzo equally appealed for more co-operation between Anambra State Chapter of NUJ and ANPC.

Also speaking, Chairman of Anambra State Chapter of NUJ, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu appealed to the state governor to retain Sir Chuka Nnabuife as Managing Director ANPC. He advised other state governors in South East to emulate Anambra by investing in state-owned newspapers.

According to Odogwu, this will not only create a medium for better interface between government and the people through quicker information dissemination but also serve as an avenue for job creation for indigenes.

Responding, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation, Sir  Nnabuife, thanked Isiguzo and his delegation for their visit.

He also assured them of the corporation’s support and partnership with NUJ both at national and state level, explaining that his leadership is already working round-the- clock to ensure improvement in various areas.
