Rainstorm kills five, injures 42 in Damaturu

A HEAVY rainstorm on Monday killed five residents of Damaturu, Yobe State.

  The rain it was gathered started around 5 pm and was accompanied by very strong wind causing havoc on residents and buildings in the metropolis.

  The Director of Rescue at the State Emergency Management Agency, Baba Jalo, confirmed that five people died and 42 sustained various degrees of injuries.

  Jalo explained that the cause of the death was as a result of some buildings that collapsed due to the intensity of the wind and the rains.

  “Yesterday we were able to evacuate a lot of injured people. We evacuated a total of 42 people that were injured to the accident and emergency unit of the State Specialist  Hospital. There are some minor injuries that other people sustained.

  “We lost five people during the rainstorm. Their houses collapsed on them. It happened in three households at Abbari Mai Mala settlement,” Jalo stated.

  He added that the storm has also caused some destructions at different locations in the metropolis including Maisadari, Nayinawa and Pompomari etc.

  He assured the agency was embarking on a rapid assessment to ascertain the actual damage caused by the rainstorm.

  Jalo also attributed the strong wind to the impact of climate, stressing “instead of the wind to come from northwards, it’s rather coming from eastward. There are clear impacts of climate change that we have to cope with.”
