Children’s Day: Anambra’ll priroritse child rights – Soludo

ANAMBRA State will recalibrate mechanisms of child rights promotion and protection in order to give the issue a pride of place in scheme of affairs. 

  Gov. Chukwuma Soludo stated while speaking during this year’s Children’s Day celebration in Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, today.

  Reiterating his administration’s commitment to rights and privileges of children, Gov. Soludo explained that no resources will be so much in strengthening and supporting systems for the child today for a better tomorrow.

  Prof Soludo, who also read President Mohammadu Buhari’s speech on the occasion, said that with the measures put in place by his administration, children in all Anambra schools will be back to school every Monday.

  Also addressing het children, Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Uche Okafor reminded them that Anambra was the first in the federation to pass Girl Child Bill into law, adding that the year’s theme is in line with Gov. Soludo’s manifesto.

  Cutting of cake and awards presentation by Children’s Parliament as well as march past by school children were high points of the event which was attended by Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, Members of Anambra State Executive Council and wife of Deputy Governor, Mrs. Ibezim, among others.

  It will be recalled that the theme of this year’s event is Strengthening Supportive Systems for the Protection of the Nigerian Child: A wake up call.

  Meanwhile, amid celebration of 2022 edition of World Children’s Day, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), today, promised to intensify its fight against child abuse and gender based violence in the state.

  Osun State Commandant of NSCDC, Emmanuel Ocheja, gave the assurance in a statement issued in Osogbo while reiterating the command’s stand on violence against children and women, saying domestic violence was becoming the order of the day in the society.

According to him, the readiness of the newly inaugurated Special Female Squad in the fight against any form of child abuse and gender based violence.

  “Children are gifts from God. Therefore, the future of the country needs to be protected against any forms of threat of abuse and gender based violence. There is the need for all stakeholders to join hands with the NSCDC to create an environment safe for all children. As a parent, having children is a significant thing that can ever happen to you. As a teacher, your utmost duty is to educate them in a way that will make them better citizens and future leaders,” he said.

  Similarly, former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to always consider the future of their children when taking critical decisions that affect their future.

Obi made the call in his message during the Children’s Day celebration in Awka, today.
