Human traffickers on the prowl in S’East – NAPTIP

SYNDICATES trafficking in young women and children are on the prowl, combing communities in South East Zone in a new wave that dwarfs their previous drag nets.

  South-East Zonal Commander of National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Nneka Ajie, gave the hints in Enugu, while expressing the agency’s concern over the development.

  Explaining her worry that vulnerable women and children still fall victims to traffickers, despite NAPTIP’s sensitiation, Ajie traced rising cases of child trafficking to sophisticated means by which the syndicates operate in South-East.

   “We need to do more as the traffickers have devised new means of getting their victims. We need to intensify the fight at the national, state and community levels. It’s sad that in spite of efforts by the agency to arrest the menace, incidences of child trafficking, illegal migration and associated crimes were on the rise in the region, for instance, we’ve inaugurated task force in Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu with Abia and Imo yet to inaugurate theirs,” Ajie said.
