Explosions kill 20, injure many, burn shops in Kano, Kogi

TWENTY persons were killed and many others injured in two new explosions that rocked Sheka Quarters in Kano and Okene town in Kogi States, yesterday. Several shops were also in both incidents.

  While the Kano blast, went off around 8pm at a gas cylinder refilling shop on yesterday night, eyewitnesses say people in the gas shop and other business owners in adjacent shops were mostly affected in the incident.

  Spokesperson of Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif, confirmed the explosion and also explained that affected victims have been evacuated to the hospital by the firemen deployed to the scene.

  “We received an emergency call at about 7:04p.m., from Adamu Muhd who reported an outbreak of fire at Sheka Karshen Kwalta, Kumbotso Local Government Area. Upon arriving the scene of the incident, we found a building of ground floor of about 40 by 40 feet used as a dwelling place and shops, engulfed by fire,” he said.

  Also, the explosion that occurred yesterday night in Idoji area of Okene happened when people, including masquerades, gathered to celebrate the annual Echane festival in Okene.

  An eyewitness, one Usman Animuko Sani, said the sound of the explosion affected many residents of the area, adding that a man lost his legs while many others sustained injuries.

  Police Public Relations Officer in Kogi State, William Ayah, confirmed the incident, adding that casualties had been evacuated.

  According to him, Commissioner of Police in Kogi State Police, Edward Egbuka, had drafted police from anti-bomb unit to the scene to uncover the cause of the explosion.
