CAN condemns Owo Church killings as Pope Francis prays for Nigeria



CHRISTIAN Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ondo State Chapter, has condemned the killing of innocent worshippers at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, on Sunday, describing the act as the highest criminality everybody should condemn.

  In a statement signed by the Director, Information and Communications (CAN), Ondo State, Daisi Ajayi, on Sunday, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Ondo State Chapter, Rev Fr. Anselm Ologunwa, expressed shock over the dastardly act, and described the incident as ungodly.

  He said the incident is one of the numerous cases happening under the security challenges facing the country which he called on President Muhammadu Buhari to address squarely. According to him, nowhere is safe in Nigeria with the recent kidnapping of Prelate of the Methodist Church and two others on the road, the train attack, airport attack and now inside the Church of God.

  Fr Ologunwa who said the day being the feast of the Pentecost Sunday in the history of the Catholic Church, assured the people that the Holy Spirit of God will definitely fight for those that were killed in the incident. He condoled the families of those who lost their loved ones in the incident, the Catholic community, the entire state and prayed God to give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

  The priest called on Ondo State Government and security agencies in the state to, as a matter of urgency, go after the perpetrators of this heinous act and bring them to justice. He affirmed that the Christian Association of Nigeria in Ondo State, will continue to promote religious harmony and equal opportunities for all in the state without discrimination.

  The chairman also admonished the people of the state to complement Governor Akeredolu’s effort on their security and always be security conscious at all times.

  Meanwhile the Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis has offered prayers for Nigeria after a terrorist attack on a Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, left over 50 people dead, including several children.

The Pope also prayed for victims of the attack.

Pope Francis while expressing his solidarity with the victims also sent his prayers.

The Pope “prays for the victims and for the country, painfully attacked at a time of celebration, and he entrusts everyone to the Lord, that God might send His Spirit to console them,” said Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, on Sunday.

It will be recalled that gunmen, yesterday,  killed a good number of  number of church worshippers in Ondo State.

The armed men entered St Francis Catholic Church in the town of Owo and fired at the congregation during a service to mark the Pentecost Day.
